Aberlour A’bunadh is one of the most celebrated sherry bombs in Scotch whisky, and Batch 85 continues the tradition in fine style. A’bunadh (pronounced “a-boo-nah”) is Gaelic for “of the origin”. The whisky was created to recapture the style of a Victorian-era Aberlour, inspired by an old bottle discovered hidden at the distillery. Every batch is bottled at natural cask strength, without chill filtration or added colour, exactly as it comes from the cask.
Batch 85 is matured only in Spanish oloroso sherry butts, which give it a deep mahogany colour and huge layers of dried fruit, spice and dark chocolate. Because each batch is small and drawn from a different selection of casks, every release has its own character. That’s why so many whisky fans collect them by number. Batch 85 has all the richness and power A’bunadh is famous for, at a strength that rewards taking your time.
Who it’s for: Lovers of big, sherried single malts, and anyone who enjoys the likes of GlenDronach or Glenfarclas at cask strength. It’s also a must for A’bunadh collectors working their way through the batches, and a superb winter or Christmas dram.
How to enjoy it: Try a small sip neat to feel the full power, then add water a few drops at a time. At this strength, water really opens it up, bringing out the fruit and softening the oak. Perfect after dinner with dark chocolate, Christmas cake or a cigar.
